How to Choose Data Storage
Match speed to workflow
Backups, operating systems, video capture, cameras and archive media all need different read speed, write endurance and interface choices.
Plan redundancy separately
A larger disk is not a backup. NAS, RAID, LTO and offsite copies solve different risks and should be planned together.
Check interface and form factor
SATA, NVMe, USB, Thunderbolt, SD, microSD and enclosure sizes must match the device and performance target.
Think about retention
Short-term transfer media, daily working storage and long-term archive should not be selected by the same rules.

Backup tip: For important data, use at least one copy that is disconnected or offsite. Fast storage helps workflow, but separation protects against deletion, ransomware and hardware failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
SSD or HDD for storage?
SSD is faster and better for active work. HDD is cost-effective for large capacity, backups and archives.
What matters in memory cards?
Check capacity, speed class, sustained write speed and device compatibility, especially for cameras and recorders.
Is NAS the same as backup?
No. NAS centralises storage and can provide redundancy, but a separate backup is still needed.
