How to use

Install drives compatible with HDD or SSD form factors into the eight drive bays and power on the unit. Use Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) to initialize storage pools and volumes, configure RAID, enable Btrfs features and snapshots, and set up user shares and permissions. Connect the DS1823xs+ to your network via the built-in 10GbE port or add network expansion cards for higher throughput. Configure backup tasks, Active Backup Suite, or Synology Drive ShareSync through DSM for centralized backup and cross-site synchronization. For expansion, attach up to two DX517 units and extend volumes online without downtime.

Recommendations

Use HDDs for large-capacity primary storage and designate NVMe or SATA SSDs as read/write cache if your workloads require lower latency or higher IOPS. Schedule regular point-in-time snapshots (as frequent as every 5 minutes where appropriate) and maintain offsite or cloud backups (3-2-1 strategy) for critical data. Monitor system health and manage drives via DSM and enable out-of-band management for remote troubleshooting.
