iWARP/RDMA technology enables low-latency data-center fabric services by providing Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Ethernet. Core mechanisms such as kernel bypass, direct data placement, and transport acceleration reduce latency and improve throughput. Intel® Data Direct I/O (DDIO) further optimizes I/O efficiency by allowing server adapters and controllers to interact directly with processor cache rather than routing traffic through system memory, which reduces latency, increases I/O bandwidth, and lowers power usage. The adapter supports PCI-SIG SR-IOV for single-root I/O virtualization, allowing a single physical I/O resource to present multiple virtual functions. Flexible Port Partitioning (FPP) leverages SR-IOV to split a physical Ethernet port into multiple virtual devices, assigning virtual functions to processes to help assure fair bandwidth allocation. Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq) offload some virtual machine monitor switching to networking hardware, reducing VMM I/O overhead and improving overall throughput and system performance.

Advantages

iWARP/RDMA and Intel DDIO together lower latency and increase I/O efficiency for demanding data-center workloads. SR-IOV and Flexible Port Partitioning enable efficient sharing of a single Ethernet port across multiple virtual machines or processes while preserving quality of service. VMDq reduces CPU overhead in virtualized environments by offloading switching tasks to the network adapter, which improves throughput and system performance. The combination of these technologies contributes to higher effective bandwidth, reduced power consumption, and more predictable I/O behavior.

Key specifications

  • RDMA over Ethernet: iWARP implementation
  • Latency reduction features: Kernel Bypass, Direct Data Placement, Transport Acceleration
  • Intel® Data Direct I/O Technology (DDIO): direct processor cache access for adapters/controllers
  • PCI-SIG SR-IOV capable: single-root I/O virtualization support
  • Flexible Port Partitioning (FPP): virtual device partitioning using SR-IOV
  • Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq): hardware offload for VMM switching

How to use

Deploy the adapter in a server designed for data-center workloads and enable iWARP/RDMA in the operating system and driver stack to benefit from low-latency RDMA over Ethernet. Ensure Intel DDIO is supported and enabled on the platform to allow direct cache I/O acceleration. Configure SR-IOV in firmware/BIOS and the hypervisor to create virtual functions, then use Flexible Port Partitioning settings to assign virtual functions to specific processes or VMs for bandwidth control. Enable and configure VMDq in the driver or management utility to offload VM switching to the network hardware and reduce VMM CPU overhead.

Recommendations

Use these technologies in virtualized, high-performance environments where low latency and predictable I/O are required. Validate platform support for Intel DDIO, SR-IOV, and VMDq in firmware, hypervisor, and drivers before deployment, and test performance with representative workloads to tune partitioning and offload settings.
