The Datalogic PowerScan PD9531 (MPN PD9531-DPM) is a rugged handheld area imager designed for Direct Part Marking (DPM) and standard label-based bar code reading. It supports 1D and 2D symbologies and captures high-resolution, small codes at close range. Built with a durable housing and optimized optics, the device reads DPM marks produced by laser etching, dot peening or ink jet, and also reads conventional printed labels. Motionix™ motion-sensing automatically switches scanning modes to match the operator's workflow.

Advantages

The PowerScan PD9531 offers a high-density optical system that enables reading of very small, high-resolution codes from near contact up to about 15.0 cm (5.9 in). For DPM applications its typical reading distance is from contact to approximately 4–5 cm (1.5–1.9 in), depending on marking technology, code resolution and surface material. An intuitive aiming system improves first-pass read rates, while soft-pulsed white illumination reduces visible flashes and is easier on users' eyes. The unit supports both DPM and label-based codes, and includes Datalogic's Motionix™ motion detection for automatic mode switching.

Suitable for

  • Reading DPM marks on metal, plastic or painted surfaces in manufacturing and traceability workflows
  • Capturing small, high-resolution 1D and 2D codes close-up
  • Mixed environments where both direct-marked and label-based barcodes are used
  • Industrial or warehouse settings requiring a rugged handheld scanner

Key specifications

  • Model: Datalogic PowerScan PD9531 (PD9531-DPM)
  • Scanner type: 1D/2D area imager
  • Sensor type: Photo diode
  • Typical DPM reading distance: contact to ~4–5 cm (1.5–1.9 in), depending on mark type
  • High-resolution code capture range: near contact up to 15.0 cm (5.9 in)
  • Connectivity: Wired (USB, RS-232, keyboard wedge)
  • Weight: 0.33 kg
  • Colours: Yellow, Black

How to use

Hold the scanner in hand and aim the imaging window at the code. For DPM marks, position the reader close to the surface (typically contact to about 4–5 cm) and center the code within the aiming pattern; for printed labels use the device at a slightly greater distance up to 15 cm as required to capture the entire code. The intuitive aiming system and Motionix™ motion detection will help the scanner switch to the appropriate read mode automatically. Connect the unit using the required wired interface (USB, RS-232 or keyboard wedge) and follow host software prompts for data capture and integration.

Recommendations

The best read performance on DPM depends on the marking method and surface condition: laser-etched and chemically etched marks typically offer higher contrast than low-contrast dot peening. Keep the imaging window clean and maintain a stable position when capturing very small, high-density codes.
