The Arduino MKR WiFi 1010 is a compact development board that adds WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity to Arduino projects. It combines a SAMD21 Cortex-M0+ 32-bit low-power MCU with a U‑BLOX NINA‑W10 (ESP32-based) module and an ECC508 crypto-authentication chip, offering 32-bit processing power, low-power wireless communication, and secure SHA-256 based authentication. The board is programmable with the Arduino IDE, supports Li-Po battery operation with automatic power source switching, and can be powered via its USB port (5V). Note: the board operates at 3.3V and I/O pins must not be exposed to voltages above 3.3V.

Advantages

The MKR WiFi 1010 integrates WiFi and Bluetooth low-energy in a small form factor while keeping low power consumption for battery-powered IoT applications. It provides hardware security via an ECC508 crypto chip, easy configuration and programming through the Arduino Software (IDE), and compatibility with other Arduino products. Onboard Li-Po charging allows running from a battery or an external 5V source with automatic switching.

Suitable for

  • Prototyping WiFi- and Bluetooth-enabled IoT devices
  • Battery-powered sensor nodes and remote monitoring
  • Secure connected applications requiring SHA-256 authentication
  • Educational projects and Arduino-based prototypes

Key specifications

  • Processor: SAMD21 Cortex-M0+ 32-bit low power MCU
  • Wireless module: U‑BLOX NINA‑W10 (ESP32-based) 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth
  • Security: ECC508 crypto-authentication (SHA-256)
  • Memory: 256 KB Flash, 32 KB SRAM
  • Clock: 48 MHz
  • Power: USB 5V input, Li-Po battery support with onboard charging and automatic source switching
  • Operating voltage: 3.3V (I/O max 3.3V)
  • Size: 25 x 61.5 mm

How to use

Install the Arduino IDE, select the Arduino MKR WiFi 1010 board and the appropriate core, and connect the board to your computer via USB to upload sketches. Use the provided WiFi and Bluetooth libraries to configure network connections and BLE services. If you use a Li‑Po battery, connect it to the board’s battery connector; the onboard charger manages charging when external 5V is present. Observe the 3.3V I/O limitation when interfacing external sensors or modules—use level shifters for bidirectional communication with 5V devices.

Recommendations

Do not apply voltages above 3.3V to any I/O pin. For safe interfacing with 5V devices, use proper level shifting. For secure communications enable the crypto authentication features and keep firmware and libraries updated.
