Canon ES-52 Lens Hood

The Canon ES-52 Lens Hood is a compact, bayonet-mounted accessory specifically made to fit the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens. With a 4 cm diameter and matte black finish, this lens hood blocks stray light that can cause lens flare and reduced contrast, helping to preserve image quality in bright or backlit conditions. It also adds a physical barrier to the front element of the lens, offering basic protection against accidental bumps, fingerprints and light scratches without affecting optical performance.

Advantages

The Canon ES-52 Lens Hood reduces unwanted flare and ghosting by shading the front element from off-axis light sources, which improves contrast and color saturation in many shooting situations. Its precise bayonet fit ensures secure attachment and alignment with the lens, while the lightweight plastic construction keeps overall camera balance unchanged. The matte interior finish minimizes internal reflections, and the hood’s compact design is easily reversible for convenient storage or when using a storage case.

How to use

Align the hood’s bayonet tabs with the corresponding slots on the front of the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens, press gently and rotate until it clicks into the locked position. To reverse the hood for storage, press the release alignment and rotate the hood into the reversed position until it locks. The hood can remain attached during typical shooting; remove it only when it obstructs the field of view or when using a filter or case that requires removal.

Recommendations

Use the hood consistently in bright lighting and backlit scenes to reduce flare and improve contrast. When transporting the lens in a bag, reverse the hood for compact storage or use a protective front cap. Avoid excessive force when attaching or detaching to prevent wear on the bayonet mount.
