The BlueOptics Q28-AOC-7M-NA-BO InfiniBand fibre optic cable 7m QSFP28 is a factory-new Active Optical Cable (AOC) with QSFP28 to QSFP28 connectors and a 7 metre length. It uses OM3 multimode fibre with a 50 µm core diameter and is designed for high-speed short-reach connections within racks or between adjacent racks. The cable supports 100GBASE-SR4 Ethernet applications and features a flame-retardant LSZH sheath for reduced smoke and no halogen release in case of fire. Built-in I/O and O/E conversion in the QSFP28 modules converts electrical signals to optical and back, enabling hot-pluggable, low-weight, and flexible links compared with direct attach twinax solutions.

Advantages

Active Optical Cable design provides reduced weight, improved flexibility and a smaller bend radius compared with direct attach copper twinax alternatives. The integrated transceiver modules comply with SFF/MSA and IEEE guidelines, ensuring compatibility with standard QSFP28 ports. OM3 multimode fibre and quality components support consistent high-speed data transmission over the 7 m link, while LSZH sheathing enhances fire safety in data centre environments. Each cable is factory tested and delivered new to ensure reliable operation.

Suitable for

  • 100G Ethernet short-reach interconnects within racks or between adjacent racks
  • InfiniBand or high-speed computing clusters requiring QSFP28 connectivity
  • Data centre switch-to-switch or switch-to-server links over short distances
  • Environments where reduced cable weight and smaller bend radius are required

Key specifications

  • Cable type: Active Optical Cable (AOC) with integrated QSFP28 transceivers
  • Connector type: QSFP28 to QSFP28, hot-pluggable
  • Length: 7 metres
  • Fibre type: OM3 multimode fibre
  • Core diameter: 50 µm
  • Supported standard: 100GBASE-SR4 Ethernet (QSFP28)
  • Sheath material: LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen) for flame resistance
  • Bend radius: designed for reduced bend radius compared with copper DAC

How to use

Insert each QSFP28 connector into the corresponding QSFP28 port on network devices until the module clicks into place. The built-in optical transceivers handle electrical-to-optical conversion automatically; no separate transceiver or additional configuration is required in most systems beyond standard port configuration. Use the 7 m cable to connect devices within the same rack or between adjacent racks, avoiding excessive bending or kinking and ensuring connectors remain free of dust before insertion. Remove the cable by releasing the QSFP28 latch mechanism and gently extracting the connector.

Recommendations

For reliable performance, use the cable within its intended short-reach range and ensure both device ports support QSFP28 and 100GBASE-SR4 operation. Maintain proper cable routing to avoid sharp bends and mechanical strain; keep connector end caps on when not in use and store cables in a clean, dry environment. Verify device firmware and compatibility lists if required by the switch or server vendor.
