The Zebra DS8178 is a wireless 2D area imager barcode scanner designed to capture both 1D and 2D barcodes reliably in environments that require cordless operation and flexible placement. The scanner reads printed labels and barcodes displayed on mobile device screens, enabling rapid data capture for retail, healthcare and logistics workflows. The DS8178 model provides a combination of handheld and hands‑free scanning modes to support diverse scanning needs while maintaining consistent read performance.

Advantages

The scanner offers cordless mobility and a wide scanning range for fast capture of barcodes on items, labels and screens. Its area imager technology improves decoding of damaged or poorly printed codes and supports high-density and standard symbologies. The device supports both handheld presentation and hands‑free operation when docked, reducing the need to reposition items and helping streamline checkouts, medication administration and inventory tasks.

How to use

Remove the scanner from its charging or presentation cradle to enter cordless mode or place it in the cradle for hands‑free scanning at a fixed station. Aim the scanner at the barcode or position the item within the imager field; trigger the scan using the scan button for handheld operation or present the code to the imager when in presentation mode. Confirm successful reads via the device feedback indicators (beep, LED or vibration) and review decoded data on the connected host system. Re‑dock the scanner to recharge the battery when not in active use.

Recommendations

For consistent performance, keep the scanner’s imager window clean and avoid excessive ambient glare when scanning barcodes on reflective surfaces. Use presentation mode for repetitive point‑of‑sale tasks and handheld mode for scanning items on shelves or in carts. Ensure the host device and scanner firmware are kept up to date for optimal decoding accuracy and compatibility with supported barcode symbologies.
