Royal Canin Renal Special dry food for adult cats is formulated to help support renal function in cats with compromised kidney health. The recipe contains maize and rice as primary carbohydrates and includes highly digestible protein sources selected for good assimilation. This renal diet is intended for use when proteinuria or elevated creatinine indicate reduced kidney function and may be continued long-term under veterinary supervision.

This formula provides controlled levels of high-quality, highly digestible protein (L.I.P.) together with a moderated phosphorus content to reduce renal workload. The diet includes added fish oil and balanced fats to supply essential fatty acids (EPA/DHA 0.41%) and uses specific fibre sources including chicory pulp and psyllium to support digestive tolerance. Vitamins and trace minerals are included at defined levels; the formula also contains technological additives such as clinoptilolite.

How to use

Introduce the Renal Special formula under veterinary guidance. Feed amounts should be adjusted to maintain ideal body condition and based on the cat’s weight, activity level and clinical status. Transition to this diet can be immediate if food aversion occurs; otherwise follow a gradual switch over several days. Regular monitoring of renal biomarkers and blood mineral levels is recommended after starting the diet.

Recommendations

Perform a full veterinary health check every six months while the cat remains on a renal diet. If diet-induced hypercalcaemia occurs, consider switching to an Early Renal formula and monitor for other mineral imbalances such as hypokalemia. In case of food aversion, switching to an alternative renal diet without transition is acceptable under veterinary advice.
